In the fall of 2014, the Friends and Volunteers of the Ocean City Free Public Library (F&Vs) began discussing the possibility of supporting MakerSpace projects. One of our members enthusiastically volunteered to provide background information and make a presentation to both the F&Vs and the Ocean City Free Public Library (OCFPL) Board of Trustees. Almost concurrently, the OCFPL was developing a strategic plan for the Library’s future.
While there are many examples of MakerSpaces, the Family Creative Learning (FCL) Workshops: http://family.media.mit.edu/ was more deeply explored. One of our members attended the online series provided by the creators, Ricarose Roque & Saskia Leggett, along with their colleagues. The well-designed concept, support materials, and support from the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media lab made the decision to present the workshops to the F&V membership very easy. The membership approved the underwriting of the project and FCL facilitators were recruited.
Workshops for the volunteer FCL facilitators began Spring 2015. The F&V membership was delighted to learn the approved OCFPL strategic plan included a room for MakerSpaces!
The first Family Creative Learning Workshop series began September 23, 2015 and will conclude with a Community Showcase on October 21, 2015. Please read the updates and…
